Clarity in conversation

If you believe as Angela Dadds does, that the quality of your communication dictates the quality of your relationships, then having clarity around what you say and how you say it is vital.

Angela, who is a communications expert in her professional practice, describes how we can become aware of what might be a hidden agenda while learning to fully engage our adult brain when we are about to enter a difficult or sensitive conversation. Too often, we allow our toddler brain to triumph – sometimes, with critical consequences.

In the video to the right, the fifth in the webinar series, Clarity, Through A Glass Brightly, Angela takes you through a process that explains the art of measured conversation we should all aspire too, if we value our relationships, professionally and personally.

Angela’s three techniques to greater success in conversation

  1. START SENSITIVE CONVERSATIONS WITH A WELL THOUGHT OUT AND GOOD INTENTION

It’s really important to develop awareness of the good intention you will bring to a conversation, because while you might be positioning the conversation as coming from a good place, underneath a bad intention could be lurking.  If you start with a good intention, it’s amazing how easily the words will flow from that.

  2. ClARIFY WHAT THE FACTS REALLY ARE

Under stress, our brains have interesting ways of interpreting what we’ve seen and heard. Really question yourself on what you’ve seen and hear or whether you’ve just made an interpretation.  A good test for this, is to think what you would have seen and heard had it all been on a digital recording.

  3. BE WILLING TO PRACTICE AND MAKE MISTAKES

If you wanted to become a world class tennis player, you would practise, practise, practise.  To be fluent in conversation, you really have to practise, because it’s like learning a new language and because it’s hard.

From Sandy:  My purpose is to work with business owners one on one to get clear on their intention for being online. Then they can define their purpose, their business principles, and create an online presence which allows them to communicate coherently and with purpose to build their community.
